Curtis Yarvin
Curtis Yarvin (b. 1973, pen name Mencius Moldbug) is an American blogger, software engineer, and the founding theorist of the neo-reactionary movement (NRx / "Dark Enlightenment").
Doctrine
- "The Cathedral": Yarvin's term for the decentralized but coordinated power of universities and mass media that manufacture American public opinion — a real insight into ideological reproduction, in Marxist terms the ideological state apparatus.
- Anti-democracy: democracy is a sham; "the people" never rule. Government is run by a managerial elite regardless of elections.
- "Monarchism"/CEO-state: the solution is to run government like a corporation under an absolute sovereign ("formalism") — patching over who actually holds power rather than pretending it doesn't exist.
- "Retrogression" not revolution: roll back the New Deal and civil-rights order to 1920s-style governance.
Infrared's critique
Yarvin is significant to Infrared as the intellectual of the tech-right (his influence on Thiel-affiliated circles and the Vance wing). Haz Al-Din's line:
- Yarvin correctly diagnoses liberal-democratic ideology as a mask for managerial power, but his cure — absolute capital-friendly sovereignty — entrenches the very oligarchy he describes.
- NRx is liberalism's honest shadow: where liberals lie about power, Yarvin tells the truth about it while defending its class content.
- The "Cathedral" concept is a class analysis with the class removed — ideology without political economy.
