Red fascism
"Red-Fascism" is the Cold War-era equation of communism with fascism — totalitarian twins, red and brown — and the term Infrared uses for the ideological operation behind that equation.
History of the concept
- Origins in liberal anti-totalitarianism (Hayek's Road to Serfdom, Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism, the 1939 NYT "red fascism" editorial) and in anarchist/left critiques of Bolshevism.
- Function during the Cold War: delegitimize both the Soviet bloc and domestic communism; justify NATO, McCarthyism, and the destruction of militant unions by collapsing all collective emancipation into Auschwitz.
- Post-1991 academic form: Black Book of Communism body-counting, "victims of communism" memorial culture — the moral ledger that makes any anti-capitalist project unthinkable in advance.
Infrared's counter-position
Infrared rejects the equation as class propaganda:
- Fascism preserved private property and destroyed the workers' movement; socialism abolished capital's command and raised the workers to rule — whatever its deformations.
- The equation survives because it serves the ruling class: if Stalin equals Hitler, then any strike, land reform, or national liberation is proto-genocide.
- Haz's dialectical point: the smear also contains a warning worth keeping — bureaucratic degeneration is real (Yezhovshchina, the nomenklatura), and socialists must account for it materially, not deny it. The answer to "red-fascism" is better communism, not liberal historiography (see Neo-Conservatism is Trotskyism, Strasserism).
