Otto Grotewohl
Otto Grotewohl (1894–1964) was chairman of the East German SPD, co-founder of the SED through the 1946 merger, and the GDR's first Prime Minister (Ministerpräsident, 1949–1964).
Career
- Social Democratic Reichstag deputy through Weimar; imprisoned under the Nazis.
- Led the eastern SPD into merger with the KPD in April 1946 — co-chairing the SED with Pieck and Ulbricht — against Western SPD objections; the act that defined East German politics.
- As head of government ran the state's day-to-day administration while Ulbricht consolidated party power; died in office 1964.
Significance
Grotewohl embodies the social-democratic half of the fusion: the mass workers' party of Saxony and Berlin delivered into socialism by its own leadership. His role is cited in debates on united fronts — proof both that worker unity was achievable and that it required the geopolitical shelter of the Red Army (see Wilhelm Pieck, German Road to Socialism).
