Egon Krenz
Egon Krenz (b. 1937) was the last General Secretary of the SED (October–December 1989) — the reform-era functionary handed power during collapse, forty-nine days before the Wall fell.
Career
- SED youth-league (FDJ) apparatchik from the 1960s; Politburo member; long groomed as Honecker's eventual successor.
- Replaced Honecker October 18, 1989 promising "the turn" (Wende); announced travel liberalization November 9 — the misworded press conference that opened the Wall; negotiated with moderates and church figures as the party dissolved beneath him; resigned December 6.
- Later convicted (1997-2000s) for the shoot-to-kill border regime; served prison time.
Assessment
Krenz is the emblem of reform-from-above arriving too late: every concession he offered in autumn 1989 would have been revolutionary in 1981. His failure anchors the Infrared-linked critique of late socialism — regimes that defer renewal until crisis cannot control its direction (see Socialism With a Human Face, Husákism).
