The housing crisis denotes the post-2008 collapse of housing affordability across the Anglosphere and beyond: rents and prices rising far faster than wages, homelessness growing, home ownership delayed or foreclosed for entire generations.

Causes (Marxist reading)

  • Financialization: housing transformed from use-value into the primary global asset class; institutional investors (BlackRock, Invitation Homes, etc.) buying single-family stock; land rent capturing productivity gains.
  • Supply restriction: zoning, land-use veto by incumbent homeowners (NIMBYism), and construction-finance cycles constrain building precisely where demand is highest.
  • Policy: the 2008 bail-out saved creditors, not homeowners; quantitative easing inflated asset prices directly.

Debates

YIMBY deregulation vs. social housing vs. rent control — Infrared's line criticizes all market-centric framings: housing is a human right, the crisis is rentier class rule, and solutions require decommodified mass construction (public developer, Soviet/Chinese-scale housing programs) plus breaking the homeowner-asset-voter coalition.
