The American translation
The GDR precedent licenses the entire Americanist move: a socialist state claiming its nation's revolutionary heritage (1776, Lincoln, the flag) is not revisionist but standard socialist practice. The GDR also anchors the defense of actually-existing socialism: "East Germany — that was a fine country, actually. A great country. People in East Germany today remember the days of the GDR quite fondly" (IRAN PRESIDENT DEAD? stream) — cited against the "Hitler defended Europe from Stalin" frame: where was the famine in the GDR?
