Bread and Circuses
"Bread and circuses" (panem et circenses, Juvenal) names the mechanism by which a decaying ruling class purchases popular quiescence with material subsidy and spectacle instead of justice.
Classical reference
Juvenal's satire on Rome: the plebs, once the arbiter of honors and war, now cares only for grain doles and games. The phrase captures the transformation of citizens into spectators — politics replaced by consumption.
Modern applications
- The postwar consumer settlement and its neoliberal afterlife: debt-financed consumption, streaming entertainment, sports spectacle, and culture-war drama as the substitute for political power.
- Infrared's usage targets especially the online left: activism-as-content, discourse cycles, and parasocial streamer politics as circuses for the nominally dissident — the simulation of opposition that never threatens the oligarchy.
- The demand side: bread (real wages, housing, industry) without circuses (ideological pacification) is the actual program of Left-Conservatism; the oligarchy offers the reverse.
