Yanis Varoufakis
Yanis Varoufakis (b. 1961) is a Greek economist, former finance minister (January–July 2015, during Greece's confrontation with the Troika), co-founder of DiEM25, and author of Talking to My Daughter About the Economy and Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism.
Positions
- Led the anti-austerity front in 2015; resigned after the SYRIZA government capitulated to the ECB/IMF memorandum despite the OXI referendum — a case study in the undemocratic power of finance over elected governments.
- His technofeudalism thesis: big tech platforms have superseded markets — algorithmic rent extraction replaces profit-through-competition; cloud capital makes us serfs, not consumers. A heterodox update of monopoly-capital theory.
- Advocates a pan-European democratic alternative while being attacked by both establishment and orthodox Marxists for his strategic choices.
Infrared treatment
Varoufakis appears in Infrared coverage as the representative figure of the respectable European left-intellectual: brilliant diagnostician, terminal reformist. The technofeudalism thesis is taken seriously (it converges with the analysis of finance-parasitism), while his Euro-communist strategy is treated as proof that the European left cannot break the system it manages (see Third Way, Years of Lead).
