Andrew Johnson (1808–1875), 17th President (1865–1869), succeeded Lincoln after assassination and sabotaged Reconstruction — the paradigmatic case of presidential treason to the war's revolutionary potential.

Record

  • A Tennessee Unionist War Democrat elevated for national unity; immediately after Appomattox he pardoned the planter class, returned confiscated lands to former rebels, and vetoed the Civil Rights Act and Freedmen's Bureau bills.
  • His leniency enabled the Black Codes and the paramilitary terror (Klan, Red Shirts) that overthrew biracial democracy across the South.
  • Impeached by the House (1868), acquitted by one vote in the Senate.

Significance

For the Infrared reading of American history, Johnson represents the recurring pattern: the counter-revolution from within — the moment a popular victory (the Civil War, the destruction of the slavocracy) is strangled at the point of consolidation by the forces of property operating inside the state. Reconstruction's failure — no land reform ("forty acres"), no sustained occupation — is the great "what if" of American socialism: an aborted proletarian-democratic revolution (see W.E.B. Du Bois' Black Reconstruction).
