Wilhelm Pieck
Wilhelm Pieck (1876–1960) was a founding communist, chairman of the KPD, first President of the GDR (1949–1960) — and one of the few German communists whose career spanned from Luxemburg and Liebknecht to the building of the socialist state.
Career
- Carpenter; joined the SPD left before WWI; co-founded the Spartacus League and KPD (1918-19) with Luxemburg and Liebknecht; Reichstag deputy; fled Hitler, led the KPD in exile (Moscow).
- 1945-46: engineered the forced merger of KPD and SPD in the Soviet zone into the SED — with Otto Grotewohl the dual chairmen symbolizing the union.
- Elected President of the GDR in 1949; his popular grandfatherly persona anchored the new state's legitimacy until his death in 1960.
Assessment
