It's always the students that feel the tremor first, because they're at the center... And always the response by students takes the form of the negation of the authorities of the institutions they themselves are based at. If you're a Russian Narodnik, you stand against the Russian university authorities. If you're in Tehran, same thing with the universities under the Shah. And in China, same thing of the universities in Beijing."
The theory
- Student radicalism is not a cause but a symptom: students sit at the nerve-center where subterranean social shifts register first (Russian peasant subjectivity; Iranian countryside; China).
- The form is pure negation of one's own institution — which explains both its energy and its limits: negation must be given content by the real social movement rising beneath it (Class, MAGA Communism).
