Robert Ley
Robert Ley ran the German Labour Front — the organization that occupied the union halls, arrested the labor leaders, and replaced collective bargaining with "Strength Through Joy" cruises.
May 2, 1933: the Nazis' first great domestic class act. Free unions dissolved, wages set by state trustees, strikes banned — and 25 million workers handed leisure-spectacle in exchange for their class power. Bread and circuses as counter-revolution (Bread and Circuses).
Ley's DAF is the standing proof of how bourgeois order survives crisis: never abolish consumption, only abolish the worker's capacity to fight for it. He hanged himself at Nuremberg before they could hang him, which saved everyone a lot of paperwork (Gottfried Feder, Vampire economy).
