Sharia (شريعة, "the way") is Islamic sacred law — and in Infrared discourse, the prime example of law as moral order against law as liberal contract.
The concept
- Sharia is not a "code" in the Western sense but the totality of divinely-ordained guidance: worship, transactions, family, punishment — jurisprudence (fiqh) as human interpretation of it, plural and evolving across schools.
- Its economic core is anti-usurious: riba (interest) prohibited, zakat (wealth transfer) obligatory, risk-sharing favored over rent-extraction — an order subordinating finance to social ends (Ottoman Empire institutionalized these constraints).
- Its political content: sovereignty belongs to the divine order, not to the people-as-contract — the direct negation of liberal proceduralism.
