Neo-conservatism is Trotskyism. The essence of Trotskyism is painting over anti-communism and support for bourgeois reaction with more revolutionary than thou phrase-mongering, adventurism, pseudo-Marxist theory, and "not real socialism" accusations. Most of these Trotskyist to neocon cases simply realized that they would be more effective in overthrowing socialism if they dropped the Marxist phraseology.

- Main article: James Burnham
James Burnham, former associate of Trotsky and founder of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers' Party, worked for the OSS, precursor to the CIA, during World War II. In 1955, he helped William F. Buckley's National Review, which was essentially the origin of neoconservatism. He became the magazine's senior editor.
Burnham and fellow Trotskyist Sidney Hook also founded the Congress for Cultural Freedom, a CIA front.
